History
The photo (EXHIBIT A) captures 700 Wakefield Ct as it appeared in 1946, situated adjacent to a military base established by the government at that time.
After the home was built construction had halted in the area as a result of the Great Depression and subsequently WWII. As the newly subdivided community of Fletcher Hills had been outfitted with paved roads, electricity, and water systems, the military found the area to be the perfect place to set up camp during the war. Despite the rest of La Mesa and El Cajon beginning to boom in the 1940s, the community of Fletcher Hills remained frozen in place until the military left the area.
The former military base now serves as Fletcher Hills Elementary School.
As the community of Fletcher Hills sat largely abandoned, so did this home (EXHIBIT B). For over 10 years the house remained presumably unoccupied after the developer who initially purchased the land from Ed Fletcher immediately returned the land in 1930 after the depression hit and the home was deeded to the city’s irrigation district in 1940.
Today, the original hardwood floors flow seamlessly throughout the home, adding warmth and elegance to every room. The original front door is adorned with ornate ironwork from the time. The original Casita can be rented out, or kept as an in-law suite or used as a home office, but will always provide the best views of the surrounding area.
